by Candide Chalippe
Born in Paris in 1684, Candide Chalippe was a French theologian and a member of the Recollect branch of the Franciscans. Reference works found during this search describe him as an 18th-century religious writer whose surviving works include a funeral oration for Cardinal de Mailly and a life of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Chalippe is most closely associated with Vie de Saint François d'Assise, published in Paris in 1727. That book later reached English-speaking readers as The Life and Legends of Saint Francis of Assisi and The Life of S. Francis of Assisi, helping preserve his reputation long after his death.
He died in Paris in 1757. While not a widely known literary figure today, his writing remains of interest to readers drawn to Franciscan history, saints' lives, and early modern Catholic biography.
