Canada. National Parks Branch

Born as Canada’s Dominion Parks Branch in 1911, this government body became the world’s first national park service and helped shape how generations of readers imagined the country’s parks. Its publications mixed practical travel information with a strong sense of national pride and outdoor adventure.

About the author

Created in 1911 under the Department of the Interior, the branch later known as the National Parks Branch was the earliest form of what is now Parks Canada. It was established to manage Canada’s national parks and is widely described as the world’s first national park service.

Over time, the branch became more than an administrative office. Through guidebooks, promotional booklets, and park literature, it introduced readers to places such as Banff, Jasper, and the Rockies, helping turn the national parks into a central part of Canada’s public story.

Because this is a government department rather than a single writer, works credited to the National Parks Branch often reflect many hands. Some publications were produced with named contributors, including writers such as M. B. Williams, whose travel writing and park promotion played an important role in the branch’s early years.
