About the author

Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1837, Cecilia Viets Jamison was raised partly in Canada and later moved with her family to Boston while still young. She studied at private schools in Canada, New York, Boston, and Paris, and she went on to build a career as both a writer and an artist.

She published fiction, plays, poems, and magazine pieces, but she is especially associated with children's and juvenile literature. Lady Jane became one of her best-known books, and her writing was noted for its readable style and interest in everyday character and feeling.

Jamison also spent part of her life in New Orleans and had periods of study in Europe, including Rome. She died on April 11, 1909, in Roxbury, Massachusetts. No suitable confirmed portrait image was found during this search, so a profile image is not included.
