Best known for graceful retellings of classic fairy tales, this English writer also built a long career in publishing. His version of The Sleeping Beauty, created as a companion to Cinderella and paired with Arthur Rackham’s illustrations, helped bring old stories to new readers.

by C. S. (Charles Seddon) Evans
Charles Seddon Evans was an English schoolmaster, publishing editor, and author born in 1883. He studied at East London College, began his working life as a teacher, and then moved into publishing, first joining Edward Arnold as Educational Editor in 1909.
In 1913 he joined Heinemann, where he spent the rest of his career and later became Chairman and Managing Director. Alongside that publishing work, he wrote retellings of traditional tales for young readers.
He is especially remembered for The Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. His Sleeping Beauty was written as a companion volume to Cinderella and is closely associated with the celebrated illustrations of Arthur Rackham.
