by C. S. (Charles Seddon) Evans
Charles Seddon Evans was a British author, editor, and publishing executive born in 1883 and died in 1944. He was educated at East London College and began his working life as a schoolmaster before moving into publishing.
He joined Edward Arnold as an educational editor in 1909, then moved to Heinemann in 1913, where he spent the rest of his career and later became chairman and managing director. Alongside that work, he wrote and retold books of his own, including versions of The Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
Evans is especially associated with beautifully illustrated editions of traditional tales, including collaborations linked with Arthur Rackham’s artwork. That mix of clear storytelling and classic bookmaking gives his work a lasting place in early twentieth-century children’s literature.
