Born in Zwolle on May 17, 1881, Catharina Magdalena van Hille-Gaerthé published under the name C.M. van Hille-Gaerthé. She grew up in a well-to-do family in the calm provincial setting of Zwolle, where her father was a doctor, and that background would later echo through her writing.

She wrote novels and stories for several audiences, including young children, older girls, and adults. Her first book appeared in 1915, and alongside her books she also published articles and serial pieces in Dutch newspapers and magazines.

Van Hille-Gaerthé remained a recognizable name in Dutch literary life for many years. She died in The Hague on December 31, 1958, leaving behind a body of work that ranged from domestic fiction to writing shaped by memory, place, and everyday life.
