Born in Zwolle on May 17, 1881, Catharina Magdalena van Hille-Gaerthé published under the name C.M. van Hille-Gaerthé. Dutch reference sources describe her as a novelist and storyteller whose books were written for several audiences, including young children, older girls, and adults.
Her first book appeared in 1915, and she went on to publish novels, short-story collections, magazine pieces, and feuilletons. Literary sources also note that she translated work and that her fiction for girls was particularly well known, especially in the decades between roughly 1920 and 1940.
