About the author

Born John Coulson Kernahan in Ilfracombe, Devon, in 1858, he was educated privately by his father and at St Albans School. After time in business, he turned to writing and built a long career as a novelist, journalist, essayist, and reviewer.

Kernahan became known for fiction as well as reflective prose on religion, society, and literature. He wrote many books across several decades, and his interests were wide: novels, short pieces, criticism, and commentary all appeared under his name.

He died in 1943. Readers who enjoy thoughtful late-19th- and early-20th-century writing may find in his work a mix of storytelling, conscience, and curiosity about the moral questions of everyday life.
