About the author

Born near Stockholm in 1793, Carl Jonas Love Almqvist became one of Sweden’s most influential 19th-century writers. Reliable reference sources describe him as remarkably versatile: a novelist and poet, but also a composer, social critic, and thinker whose work ranged from imaginative Romantic writing to unusually direct realism.

His literary output was large and varied, and that range is a big part of why he remains notable. Britannica credits him with helping shape modern Swedish literature, especially through his prose, while biographical summaries also note how willing he was to engage with social and economic questions in his writing.

Almqvist’s life ended far from where it began: after being born on November 28, 1793, he died in Bremen on September 26, 1866. Today he is remembered less as a writer who fit neatly into one school than as a bold, unpredictable voice whose books kept testing the boundaries of Swedish literature.
