About the author

Born in Devon in 1858, Charles John Cornish was an English naturalist, writer, and schoolmaster. He was educated at Charterhouse and later at St John’s College, Cambridge, and he became known for explaining animals and the natural world in a way that was both informed and warmly readable.

Cornish spent many years as a master at St. Paul’s School in London while also building a successful writing career. He wrote regularly for magazines and newspapers, including The Spectator and the Country Life publications, and produced popular books on wildlife, country scenes, and natural history.

His best-known works include The Naturalist on the Thames, Life at the Zoo, and Animals at Work and Play. He died in 1906, but his writing still feels inviting for readers who enjoy nature described with curiosity, clarity, and affection.
