About the author

Born in Ipswich in 1886, he studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and later built his career in India as a teacher and scholar. Reference works on Indian studies describe him as a British teacher of English and a numismatist, showing how comfortably he moved between literature and historical research.

From 1909 he taught at Canning College in Lucknow. He later served as a Fellow of Allahabad University, became Reader in English Literature at Lucknow University, and was also associated with museum and cataloging work on Indian coins. That blend of academic and museum experience gave his writing a practical, well-informed tone.

Brown is best remembered for The Coins of India (published in 1922), an accessible introduction to the history of coinage across the Indian subcontinent. He died on October 20, 1945. I couldn't confirm a suitable portrait image from the sources I checked, so none is included here.
