About the author

Born in Maalahti on June 27, 1839, Carl Gustaf Swan worked as a teacher, journalist, and publisher in Finland. Finnish reference sources identify him as an educator, and biographical material describes him as a cultural figure who was active in public life as well as in writing.

He is especially linked with early Finnish-language publishing. Accounts of his life note that he founded Lappeenrannan Uutiset, the first newspaper in Lappeenranta, and later brought the town its first printing press. As a writer, he is known for works including the travel book Matkahawannoita Wiron ja Liiwin maalta.

Swan died in Helsinki on May 1, 1916. He remains of interest both for his own writing and for his place in Finnish literary history, since his daughter Anni Swan became one of Finland’s best-known authors of children’s literature.
