Born in Scotland in 1837, Constance Frederica Gordon-Cumming grew up in a large, well-connected family and later became known both as a travel writer and as an artist. A visit to India helped spark her love of long-distance travel, and from there she went on to journey widely through Asia, the Pacific, and North America.
She wrote prolifically about what she saw, publishing travel books on places including Fiji, Ceylon, Hawaii, China, and Japan. Her writing stood out for its detailed descriptions and for the way she paired words with sketches and paintings made on her travels.
Gordon-Cumming is remembered as one of the notably adventurous women travelers of the Victorian era. She died in 1924, leaving behind a body of work that still offers readers a lively window into nineteenth-century travel and empire.
