About the author

Born in 1848, he was an English scholar, historian, numismatist, and novelist. He studied at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and later worked in the British Museum's Department of Coins and Medals, where his research helped build his reputation as a serious scholar.

His nonfiction included writing on early belief, Norse history, and the ancient world, while his later career turned more strongly toward fiction. That shift gave his work a distinctive character: intellectually curious, historically informed, and often more ambitious than conventional popular novels of the period.

He died in 1917. Though not a household name today, he remains an interesting figure for readers who enjoy authors whose literary work grew out of deep historical learning.
