About the author

Born in Copenhagen in 1818, Jens Christian Hostrup studied theology at the University of Copenhagen while also building a literary career. He wrote poetry and plays, and his stage work was praised for its sharp observation of everyday life and natural, concise dialogue.

Hostrup is especially remembered for popular comedies and for poems and hymns that spoke to Danish readers in times of hardship. Alongside his writing, he served as a Lutheran priest, later holding posts in Silkeborg, Linå, and Hillerød.

He died in Frederiksberg in 1892. His mix of humor, warmth, and moral seriousness helped make him a familiar and well-liked figure in Danish literary life.
