An Anglican missionary and memoirist, he left a firsthand account of life and mission work in the New Hebrides, now Vanuatu. His writing offers a direct glimpse of 19th-century travel, faith, and cross-cultural encounter in the South Pacific.

Best known for Journal of Residence in the New Hebrides, S.W. Pacific Ocean, he was associated with the Melanesian Mission and worked in the South Pacific in the late 19th century, including in Vanuatu and on Norfolk Island. Library and archive records describe him as having joined the mission in 1868 and later returning to Australia.
His surviving work is valued today as a primary account of missionary life in the New Hebrides. It combines travel writing, observation, and the day-to-day realities of mission work, giving modern readers a window into a particular place and moment in colonial-era Pacific history.
Some records list his birth year as 1846 rather than 1844, so the exact year is not fully consistent across sources. I could not confirm a reliable portrait image from the sources I found, so none is included here.
