About the author

Born in 1877, Cecil Boden Kloss was an English zoologist with a strong interest in Southeast Asian wildlife. Early in his career, he joined expeditions in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and built a reputation as a careful observer of mammals and birds.

He later worked in Malaya and Singapore, including at the museum in Kuala Lumpur, and eventually became Director of the Raffles Museum in Singapore. Through collecting, classifying, and publishing, he helped expand scientific knowledge of the region’s fauna.

Kloss also wrote books drawn from his travels, so his name appears not only in scientific circles but in nature writing as well. He died in 1949, and he is still remembered for his contributions to zoology and to the study of Southeast Asia’s biodiversity.
