About the author

Born in Indore on February 8, 1870, Charles Augustus Kincaid was educated at Sherborne School and Balliol College, Oxford, before joining the Indian Civil Service in 1889. He went on to serve in India as an administrator and later as a judge, building the deep regional knowledge that would shape much of his writing.

Kincaid wrote widely on Indian history, folklore, and religion. His books include retellings and story collections such as Deccan Nursery Tales, Tales from the Indian Epics, and Tales of Old Sind, alongside historical work. He is best known today for History of the Maratha People, the three-volume study he co-authored with Dattatray Balwant Parasnis.

His work often aimed to make Indian stories and history accessible to English-language readers in a clear, engaging way. He died in London on August 15, 1954.
