by C. A. (Celestia Angenette) Bloss
Celestia Angenette Bloss was an American writer and educator born on March 7, 1812, and she died on October 13, 1855. Records of her published work identify her as C. A. Bloss, and surviving bibliographic listings connect her with books including Heroines of the Crusades and Ancient History.
Her writing focused on making history accessible to a broad audience. Heroines of the Crusades, first published in 1853, is a vivid narrative about notable women connected with the Crusades, while Ancient History was used in family and school settings and continued to appear in later editions.
A memorial record also credits her with an important career in education in Rochester, New York, where she taught and helped establish the Clover Street Seminary in 1848. That same record says she died young, at forty-three, after an illness then called consumption, and that her pupils later honored her with a monument.
