About the author

Trained as a chemist, Burrell L. Wood earned degrees from Presbyterian College, the University of Georgia, and the University of North Carolina. He was also head of the Chemistry Department at Furman University, where he helped encourage science education beyond the classroom.

In 1953, he organized a statewide science fair program in South Carolina, reflecting a strong interest in giving students real chances to explore scientific ideas for themselves. That same practical spirit shows in Atoms at the Science Fair, the book he coauthored with Robert G. LeCompte.

The book presents nuclear science in an approachable way for students and teachers, turning a complex subject into something curious readers could actually investigate. Even from this small published record, he comes across as a teacher-scientist who cared deeply about making science clear, useful, and exciting.
