About the author

Born in Florence around 1220, Brunetto Latini was a notary, diplomat, and political figure as well as a writer. He was active in the civic life of the city, and after the defeat of the Florentine Guelphs at Montaperti in 1260 he spent time in exile in France before eventually returning home.

That exile shaped some of his most important work. He wrote Li Livres dou Trésor, an ambitious encyclopedia in French, and is also known for the Italian poem Tesoretto. His writing shows a strong interest in rhetoric, ethics, and practical knowledge, and it helped carry classical and learned ideas into the growing vernacular culture of medieval Italy.

Latini is also closely linked with Dante, who treated him as an important intellectual mentor. Even centuries later, he remains a fascinating figure because he stood at the meeting point of politics, scholarship, and the birth of early Italian literary culture.
