About the author

Born in Dordogne in 1871, Émile Bruneau de Laborie was a remarkably varied figure: an explorer, sportsman, fencing organizer, journalist, and author. French reference sources identify him as Émile Louis Aristide Bruneau de Laborie, and record that he died in Bangui in 1930. He also wrote under the pen name Jean Septime.

Alongside his activities in fencing and public life, he published books drawn from his travels and expeditions, especially in Africa. Library records connect his name with works on dueling, exploration, and routes across regions including Libya, Chad, Cameroon, and Central Africa, showing how closely his writing grew out of direct experience.

For readers today, his books offer more than adventure alone. They capture the worldview of a French traveler moving through the colonial world of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, making them interesting both as travel narratives and as historical documents of their time.
