About the author

Born in 1882, he became known as an Irish poet, songwriter, historian, and republican activist whose writing was closely tied to the cultural nationalism of his time. He wrote under the pen name Banba and was associated with the Gaelic revival, using journalism, verse, and public writing to promote Irish history, language, and identity.

His life reached beyond literature into politics and public service. He was involved in Irish nationalist activity, was imprisoned more than once, and later served in Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Irish parliament. Alongside his political work, he continued to publish poems, songs, biographies, and historical studies that kept the memory of earlier generations of Irish revolutionaries alive.

Remembered today as a writer who linked literature with national memory, he left behind a body of work shaped by patriotism, faith, and a deep interest in Irish history. He died in 1963, after a long career spent defending and retelling Ireland’s story.
