About the author

Born on 19 June 1853, Herbert Bury was an Anglican bishop educated at Lincoln College, Oxford, and ordained in 1878. After serving in parish work, he was appointed Bishop of British Honduras in 1908, then became Bishop for Northern and Central Europe in 1911, a role he held until 1926.

Bury is especially remembered for combining church leadership with energetic travel and writing. His book A Bishop Amongst Bananas grew out of his time in Central America and offers a lively picture of mission work and travel in the region.

He died on 15 January 1933. Today he stands out as a churchman whose career stretched across countries and cultures, and whose writing gives modern readers a direct glimpse of Anglican life in the early twentieth century.
