Bohun Lynch

1884–1928

A witty British man of letters who moved easily between boxing, journalism, illustration, and fiction, he brought unusual range to everything he wrote. His books stretch from sporting manuals and social satire to ghost stories and early science fiction.

About the author

Born in London in 1884, Bohun Lynch was educated at Haileybury and at University College, Oxford, where he boxed as a middleweight and later captained the boxing team. That mix of athletic discipline and literary curiosity shaped a career that ranged across journalism, illustration, criticism, and fiction.

He wrote well-known books on boxing, including The Complete Amateur Boxer, and also published works such as The Complete Gentleman and A History of Caricature. He edited ghost-story collections and wrote fiction of his own, including the 1925 novel Menace from the Moon, which is still noted as an early example of lunar science fiction.

Lynch died in 1928. Even in a relatively short life, he built a body of work that feels lively and hard to pin down in the best way: literary, playful, and often just a little unexpected.
