About the author

Born William Ashley Sunday in Iowa in November 1862, he lost his father shortly after birth and spent part of his childhood in an orphanage. As a young man he became a successful professional baseball outfielder, playing in the National League before leaving the sport after his religious conversion.

Sunday rose to fame as an evangelist whose revival meetings drew huge crowds across the United States. He was known for fast-paced sermons, dramatic gestures, and direct, everyday language that connected with broad audiences during a time of rapid social change.

Remembered as both a religious celebrity and a cultural force, he helped shape popular revivalism in the early 1900s. His unusual path from ballplayer to preacher still makes him one of the most recognizable American evangelists of his era.
