1846–1900
A German novelist from Breslau, she wrote about marriage, social expectations, and women’s lives in the late 19th century. Her work often turns a sharp, observant eye on educated urban society and the pressures placed on women within it.

by Bianca Bobertag
Born Bianca Marbach in Breslau on October 19, 1846, she became known as Bianca Bobertag after marrying the literary historian Felix Bobertag. She was a German writer who also published under the pen names Victor Valentin and Irenäus Wasservogel.
Bianca Bobertag wrote novels and shorter fiction, and surviving references to her work show a strong interest in relationships, intellectual circles, and women’s position in society. Modern scholarship describes her as a largely forgotten Breslau author whose writing engaged with questions of women’s rights and the social world of an academic city.
She died in Breslau in March 1900. Although she is not widely known today, works such as Eheglück have remained accessible, helping keep her voice present for modern readers interested in overlooked 19th-century women writers.
