Born in Pori in 1837, Betty Gustafva Lovisa Elfving was a Finnish writer from a Swedish-speaking family. She wrote under the pen name Aura and is remembered mainly for historical novels set in Finland’s past.
Elfving began publishing relatively late in life, but her fiction still made a mark. She is especially associated with Härkmanin pojat and the two-part Vuosisatain perintö, works that brought her recognition and were popular with younger readers of the time.
She wrote in Swedish, and her books were translated into Finnish, helping them reach a wider audience. Elfving died in Turku in 1923, and her work remains part of Finland’s literary history as an example of historical storytelling shaped by national memory and identity.
