About the author

Elizabeth King McGee Curtis was an American science fiction and fantasy writer born in Toledo, Ohio, on September 17, 1917. She studied English at Oberlin College, later earned a master's in education, and built a writing career centered on short fiction rather than novels.

Her stories appeared in major genre magazines from the 1950s into the 1970s, including The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Galaxy, If, Infinity, and Analog. She is especially remembered for "The Steiger Effect," a 1968 story that was nominated for the Hugo Award, and for bringing a light, intelligent touch to classic science-fiction ideas.

Beyond publishing, she was also active in science-fiction fandom and the Society for Creative Anachronism, with a reputation for poetry and costume work as well as fiction. She died on April 17, 2002, in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
