Betsy Curtis

1917–2002

A sharp, witty voice from mid-century science fiction, she wrote stories that mixed big speculative ideas with humor and a very human touch. Her work also grew out of deep roots in fandom, where she was known not just as a writer but as an active, creative presence.

About the author

Elizabeth King McGee Curtis was an American science fiction and fantasy writer born in Toledo, Ohio, on September 17, 1917. Sources agree that she published her first story, "Divine Right," in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1950, launching a career centered mostly on short fiction.

Her stories appeared during the classic magazine era of speculative fiction, and her 1969 story "The Steiger Effect" was nominated for a Hugo Award. Reference sources also connect her closely with science-fiction fandom: she was married to fellow fan Ed Curtis, was the mother of Maggie Thompson, and was remembered as a talented costumer as well as a writer.

She died on April 17, 2002. Archival and bibliographic sources suggest a body of work that was not enormous in size, but was distinctive enough to keep her name alive among readers of classic science fiction.
