About the author

Born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1888 and educated at Harvard, Henry Beston became an American writer remembered above all for his lyrical nature writing. He wrote across several genres during his life, including memoir, wartime recollection, and fiction for younger readers.

His most celebrated book, The Outermost House (1928), grew from time spent living alone in a small house on Cape Cod. The book helped shape modern nature writing through its careful attention to the rhythms of sea, weather, birds, and dunes.

Beston’s writing remains admired for its calm, thoughtful style and for the sense that the natural world deserves both respect and wonder. He died in 1968, but his work continues to speak to readers who love landscape, solitude, and the living world.
