Born in 1867, Bessie Lyle Hatton was an English actress, playwright, journalist, novelist, and feminist. She was the daughter of the novelist and journalist Joseph Hatton, and records of her career note that she briefly worked as an actress before turning more fully to literary work.
Hatton is remembered not only for her fiction but also for her public activism. She was involved in the struggle for women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom and is associated with the founding of the Women Writers' Suffrage League alongside Cicely Hamilton in 1908.
Her writing includes fiction such as The Village of Youth and Other Fairy Tales and Enid Lyle. She died in 1964, leaving behind a career that connected storytelling, journalism, theatre, and political commitment.
