by Bertram W. H. (Bertram William Henry) Poole
Born in England on March 22, 1880, Bertram William Henry Poole built his reputation as a respected philatelist before later settling in the United States. He became known for writing numerous monographs and reference works on stamps, turning careful research into books that collectors could actually use.
Poole wrote extensively on postal issues from around the world, including works on places such as Sarawak and Germany and its colonies. His career connected him closely with the international stamp trade and with the serious study of philately, the collecting and study of postage stamps.
He died on September 8, 1957. Although he is not widely known outside collecting circles today, his writing remains a window into the early twentieth-century world of stamp scholarship and hobby literature.
