by Berta Edelfelt
Born in Helsinki on March 7, 1869, Berta Edelfelt was a Finnish-Swedish author who wrote in Swedish. She studied in Helsinki, qualified as a teacher, and went on to work as a Swedish-language teacher in a girls’ school, later also helping lead a school run by her sister Annie.
Her best-known book is Vanhan päiväkirjan lehtiä, a work connected to the life of J. L. Runeberg. Reference sources also describe her as the daughter of Carl Albert Edelfelt and Alexandra Augusta Brandt Edelfelt, and as the sister of the painter Albert Edelfelt, whose portraits helped preserve her image for later generations.
She died in Helsinki on February 4, 1934. Though not widely known outside Nordic literary history, she remains an interesting figure for listeners drawn to Finnish cultural life, women’s writing, and the circles around one of Finland’s most famous artistic families.
