About the author

Born in 1921 and active through the middle of the twentieth century, Bernard Beckerman was an American Shakespeare scholar, theater director, and teacher. He led the drama department at Hofstra University and later served at Columbia University as Brander Matthews Professor of Dramatic Literature.

His work focused on how plays come alive in performance, not just on the page. That interest shaped books including Shakespeare at the Globe, Dynamics of Drama, and Theatrical Presentation: Performer, Audience and Act, which helped readers think about drama as something shared between actors and audiences.

He also served as president of the American Society for Theatre Research. Beckerman died in 1985, leaving behind a body of work that continued to matter to students of Shakespeare, theater history, and performance.
