About the author

Born in Philadelphia on October 6, 1903, Benjamin Sacks went on to build a long academic career as a historian. Sources about his life indicate that he taught history at the University of New Mexico for many years and later at Arizona State University, with British history among his main specialties.

Records of his books show the range of his interests. In addition to historical works such as Bibliography for Europe between 1815–1914, Bibliography for Europe Since 1914, and J. Ramsay MacDonald in Thought and Action, he also wrote The Story of Chanukah, bringing an important Jewish tradition to readers in a concise, approachable way.

He lived to the remarkable age of 104, dying on December 15, 2007. The surviving record suggests a writer and teacher deeply committed to history, research, and public understanding — someone who spent decades helping readers make sense of the past.
