About the author

Born in Kaunas, in what is now Lithuania, in 1898, he emigrated to New York with his family as a child and went on to become an American painter, photographer, printmaker, and writer. He is especially associated with social realism and with art that responded directly to public life, labor, injustice, and democracy.

Alongside his paintings and graphics, he wrote thoughtfully about what art is for and how artists work. His best-known book, The Shape of Content, grew out of lectures and remains admired for its plainspoken, personal way of thinking about creativity, craft, and freedom.

His career ranged across easel painting, photography, posters, murals, and illustration, and his work often joined strong design with moral urgency. That mix of visual power and clear human concern helped make him an important voice in 20th-century American art.
