About the author

Born in Lithuania in 1898, he immigrated to the United States as a child and grew into one of the most recognizable American social realist artists of the 20th century. He worked across painting, photography, murals, prints, posters, and book illustration, building a style that was direct, human, and deeply concerned with ordinary lives.

Much of his best-known work was shaped by public events and moral questions. He became widely known for art connected to the Sacco and Vanzetti case, and his broader body of work often reflected left-leaning politics, labor issues, and the struggles of people living through depression and war. Even when addressing large political themes, his images usually stay personal and emotionally clear.

He also wrote and lectured about art, helping explain why images matter and how artists respond to the world around them. That mix of visual power and plainspoken thoughtfulness is a big part of why his work still feels alive today.
