About the author

Born Mary Beatrix Nunns in 1869, she later became known as Beatrix Bulstrode and, after her second marriage, Beatrix Manico Gull. She was a British journalist and explorer whose name is most closely linked with travel in China and Mongolia.

Her best-known book, A Tour in Mongolia (1920), drew on her travels in the region and helped introduce readers to Mongolian life, landscapes, and the upheavals of the period. Contemporary editions and library records also connect her with the name Mrs. Edward Manico Gull, which appears alongside her published work.

She died in 1951. Today, she is remembered for combining reportage, curiosity, and a willingness to travel in difficult conditions at a time when few women were able to publish such accounts from Inner Asia.
