A lively journalist and travel writer, he turned reporting, theater, and nightlife into books with real period flavor. His work ranges from sharp-eyed guides to Paris and Havana to biographies and frontier history.

by John H. (John Henry) Cady, Basil Woon
Born in London in 1893, he built a varied career as a playwright, journalist, and author. Sources agree that he reported on the Mexican Revolution for United Press and also worked for newspapers including the New York World, The Houston Press, and the San Francisco News, as well as for the BBC.
He is especially remembered for colorful nonfiction with a strong sense of place, including The Paris That’s Not in the Guidebooks, When It’s Cocktail Time in Cuba, and Cocktails in Paris. He also wrote biography and history, including books on Sarah Bernhardt and Arizona’s pioneer past, which helps explain why his bibliography feels both cosmopolitan and eclectic.
He died in 1974 in Nevada. I couldn’t confirm a suitable portrait image from the pages available during this search, so no profile image is included here.
