About the author

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 1, 1909, Barry Goldwater grew up in his family's department store business and later took it over after his father's death. He also developed lifelong interests in aviation, radio, and photography, and served in the military during World War II before continuing a long career in the Air Force Reserve.

Goldwater served in the U.S. Senate for Arizona from 1953 to 1965 and again from 1969 to 1987. He won the Republican presidential nomination in 1964, and although he lost that election in a landslide, his campaign helped energize the conservative movement that would grow more influential in the decades that followed.

In later years, he remained an important and sometimes unpredictable Republican voice, known for blunt opinions and a strong belief in limited government. He died on May 29, 1998, and is still remembered as a major figure in 20th-century American political history.
