About the author

Born in London in 1868 into the Rothschild family, Walter Rothschild followed his own interests from an early age. Reliable sources describe him as a banker, politician, and zoologist, but natural history was the work that truly defined his life.

He assembled an enormous collection of animals and specimens and created the museum at Tring, now known as the Natural History Museum at Tring. Accounts from the Rothschild Archive and the Natural History Museum emphasize how deeply he devoted himself to collecting, studying, and organizing the natural world.

Rothschild inherited the title of 2nd Baron Rothschild in 1915 and is also remembered in political history because the Balfour Declaration was addressed to him in 1917. He died in 1937, leaving behind a legacy that connects scientific curiosity, public collecting, and one of Britain’s most remarkable family names.
