About the author

Born in Cupar, Fife, in 1779, he studied at St Andrews and went on to build a major career in law and politics. Over the years he served as attorney general, lord chief justice, and eventually lord chancellor, becoming John Campbell, 1st Baron Campbell.

Alongside his public career, he wrote extensively and became known as a man of letters as well as a statesman. His best-known books include The Lives of the Lord Chancellors and The Lives of the Chief Justices, works that mixed legal history with character sketches, anecdotes, and a strong personal point of view.

He died in 1861, but his books continued to shape how many readers pictured Britain's legal past. For audiobook listeners, he offers a blend of insider knowledge, ambition, wit, and nineteenth-century storytelling.
