About the author

Born in 1831, George John Shaw-Lefevre became a prominent Liberal politician in Britain and later took the title 1st Baron Eversley. Over a ministerial career lasting about thirty years, he served in several senior posts, including First Commissioner of Works, Postmaster General, and President of the Local Government Board.

Alongside politics, he wrote extensively on public affairs and history. He was especially associated with questions of land, agriculture, and the preservation of commons, and he remained an active writer well into old age.

For readers today, he is an interesting author because his books bring together the habits of a working statesman and an independent historian. The Turkish Empire, Its Growth and Decay reflects that mix: broad in scope, strongly argued, and shaped by someone who had spent decades thinking about government, reform, and the long sweep of history.
