About the author

Born in Rouen in 1823, Baron Jean Charles Davillier came from a wealthy family but turned away from business life to devote himself to art, travel, and writing. He became known as a French writer and collector with a deep interest in ceramics, decorative arts, and the history of craftsmanship.

Davillier traveled widely and wrote extensively, especially about Spain, a country he explored with the artist Gustave Doré. Their collaboration helped make his travel writing especially memorable, blending close observation with rich illustration. He also wrote as an art historian and critic, bringing attention to artistic traditions that were often overlooked.

He died in Paris in 1883. His legacy lived on through the important collections he left to French public institutions, including the Louvre, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Sèvres museum tradition, showing how seriously he cared about preserving art as well as studying it.
