About the author

Born in Pest on June 20, 1824, Baron Frigyes Podmaniczky grew up in Aszód and was educated in Pest and Késmárk. He entered public life early, studied in Berlin, and took part in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49, serving as a hussar captain before returning home after the defeat.

In the decades that followed, he became a well-known politician and public figure in Hungary. He served for many years as a member of parliament and was also vice president of Budapest’s Council of Public Works, a role that linked his name closely with the growth and modernization of the city in the late 19th century.

Podmaniczky was more than a statesman: he was also a writer, journalist, and an active presence in the cultural life of his time. Elected a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1859, he is still remembered for his memoirs and for the lasting role he played in the making of Budapest. He died in Budapest on October 19, 1907.
