About the author
Born in 1869, Sir Lionel Barnett Abrahams built his career in the India Office, where he became known as a civil servant deeply involved in financial and administrative questions affecting British India. He was also a historian and economist, and his writing reflects both scholarly curiosity and first-hand knowledge of government.
Abrahams studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and later rose to senior office, including service as financial secretary for India and then as assistant under-secretary of state for India.
