Born in Lisbon on May 24, 1833, Manuel Lourenço Roussado built a career that joined literature with diplomacy. He worked in the public administration before entering the diplomatic service, where he served in places including Cádiz, Bordeaux, Marseille, and later Liverpool.

He wrote across several genres, including poetry, plays, and prose, and his published work shows a lively engagement with the literary culture of 19th-century Portugal. Modern library and archive records also preserve a substantial list of his books, which helps show how active and varied his writing life was.

Roussado was granted the title of 1st Barão de Roussado in 1871 in recognition of his service to the country. He died in Liverpool on December 22, 1909, leaving behind the record of a writer who balanced creative work with a long career in public service.
