About the author

Born in Lisbon on May 24, 1833, Manuel Lourenço Roussado was a Portuguese writer, poet, dramatist, and diplomat. He was granted the title of 1st Baron of Roussado in 1871 by King Luís I, in recognition of his service to the country.

Roussado worked for the Secretariat of the Attorney General's Office from 1852 to 1871, and late in life he served as Portugal's consul in Liverpool, where he died on December 22, 1909. His career reflects a mix of literary ambition and public duty, linking the cultural world of 19th-century Portugal with official state service.

His published works include poetry, comic and satirical writing, plays, and travel impressions, such as Noites de Lisboa, Folhetins humorísticos, and Entre estrangeiros: impressões de viagem. That variety suggests an author comfortable moving between humor, social observation, and the stage.
