About the author

Born in Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro, in 1837, Antônio Luiz von Hoonholtz became one of the most wide-ranging public figures of imperial and early republican Brazil. He served in the navy and later gained recognition as the Baron of Teffé, building a career that brought together military service, geography, diplomacy, and writing.

He is especially associated with hydrography and exploration. Accounts of his life describe him as an admiral, geographer, and explorer, and his published work helped record expeditions and frontier regions of Brazil, including journeys connected with the Javari River. That mix of firsthand travel experience and careful observation gives his writing a strong sense of place.

Later in life, he also served in politics and diplomacy, including a period as a senator. He died in 1931, leaving behind a legacy that links Brazilian naval history with scientific mapping and travel literature.
