An Irish collector of folklore, Bampton Hunt is best remembered for gathering stories from the Breffny region and preserving them in print in the early 20th century. Her work offers a vivid glimpse of oral storytelling traditions from County Cavan and nearby areas.

by Bampton Hunt
Bampton Hunt was an Irish writer and folklorist associated with the Breffny region, the historic area spanning parts of counties Cavan and Leitrim. She is best known for Folk Tales of Breffny, published in 1912, a collection that brought local legends and fireside stories to a wider readership.
In the introduction to that book, Hunt explains that many of the tales came from people who had learned them by oral tradition rather than from books. That gives her work a strong sense of place: the stories feel close to the voices, humor, beliefs, and imagination of rural Irish life.
Although little biographical information is easy to confirm, Hunt's lasting importance lies in preservation. By writing down tales that might otherwise have been lost, she helped keep a rich strand of Irish folk culture alive for later readers.
