About the author

Born George Herman Ruth Jr. in Baltimore on February 6, 1895, he spent much of his youth at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, where he developed the baseball skills that changed his life. He reached the major leagues in 1914 with the Boston Red Sox, first standing out as an excellent left-handed pitcher before becoming an extraordinary hitter.

After joining the New York Yankees, he helped redefine the sport through his home-run hitting and became a central figure in baseball's growing popularity. His record-setting power, huge personality, and nickname "the Sultan of Swat" turned him into a national celebrity, and he was elected in 1936 as one of the first five members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

He died in New York on August 16, 1948, but his story has remained a lasting part of American sports history. Remembered for both his talent and his larger-than-life presence, he still stands as one of baseball's most enduring icons.
