About the author

Born on July 25, 1869, in Lemu and dead on October 28, 1931, in Helsinki, Aukusti Robert Niemi was a Finnish folklorist best known for his work on Finnish and comparative folk poetry. He served as secretary of the Finnish Literature Society in the early 1900s and taught at the University of Helsinki, where he later became professor of Finnish and comparative folklore research.

Niemi belonged to the generation that turned folklore into a more systematic academic field. Alongside his research and teaching, he carried out collecting work and was especially noted for his connection with Lithuanian folk tradition. That international side of his career was recognized when he was named an honorary doctor of the University of Kaunas in 1923.

Remembered as both a scholar and a builder of institutions, he helped preserve and interpret oral tradition at a time when it was becoming central to cultural history in Finland and the wider Baltic region.
