by Aukusti Robert Niemi
Aukusti Robert Niemi was born in Lemu, Finland, on July 25, 1869, and died in Helsinki on October 28, 1931. He was a Finnish scholar of folk poetry and later a professor at the University of Helsinki, where he taught and researched folklore and oral tradition.
His work connected scholarship with cultural preservation. Niemi worked with the Finnish Literature Society and became known for research on Finnish folk poetry, including studies related to Elias Lönnrot and the Kalevala tradition. He also spent years documenting Lithuanian folklore, a part of his career that is often described as especially significant.
Because of that cross-Baltic work, Niemi is remembered not only in Finland but also in Lithuania, where his collecting and publishing helped preserve traditional songs and oral heritage. His writing belongs to an important period in Nordic and Baltic folklore studies, when scholars were racing to record living traditions before they disappeared.
