About the author

Born in Brooklyn in 1873, Augustus Thomas Post Jr. was far more than a writer. He became known as an adventurer, lecturer, and early promoter of modern transportation, with strong ties to both the automobile and aviation worlds. He studied at Amherst College and later attended Harvard Law School, but his real path led toward travel, mechanics, and public life.

Post was active in ballooning from 1900 and belonged to the first generation of Americans involved in heavier-than-air flight after the Wright brothers. He helped found the Aero Club of America and spent years encouraging public interest in flight, while also working as an editor and lecturer on aeronautics. Library and archival records describe him as a pioneer aviator as well as an author, showing how closely his writing was linked to the dramatic new technologies of his era.

What makes him memorable is the range of his life: he was also a musician, actor, and public speaker, and he had a gift for turning bold new experiences into stories people wanted to hear. He died in 1952, leaving behind a career that reflects the excitement of an age when cars, balloons, and airplanes still felt astonishingly new.
