About the author

Augustus John Cuthbert Hare was an English man of letters and painter, born in Rome on March 13, 1834, and died in 1903. He is best remembered as a travel writer and memoirist whose books invited readers into churches, cities, country houses, and the everyday life surrounding them. His work often blended guidebook detail with anecdote, character sketches, and personal reflection.

He was educated in England and became a prolific author, writing well-known books such as Walks in Rome, Days Near Rome, and Cities of Northern and Central Italy, along with memoirs including The Story of My Life and Memorials of a Quiet Life. His writing appealed to readers who wanted more than directions or dates: he gave them atmosphere, gossip, history, and a strong sense of place.

Alongside his books, Hare also painted, and his life moved between Britain and the Continent in ways that shaped his subject matter. Today he stands out as one of those 19th-century writers who made travel feel personal and companionable, as if an informed friend were showing you the world.
